21 July, 2022

SpaceX will soon launch satellite Internet service in Georgia – the National Communications Commission of the country has granted the company a license to provide the service.

SpaceX has been discussing legal issues with the Georgian regulator for about a year. At the end of June, the company Starlink Georgia was registered in Georgia. On July 8 SpaceX applied to the Commission for authorization.

At the same time, the US company sent its representative to Georgia to study the specifics of the market. The Georgian regulator believes that the launch of SpaceX will contribute to the development of the market of innovative digital services.

In the first stage, the company plans to provide access to Starlink in high mountainous regions of Georgia and settlements where broadband internet is not available. According to the latest data the internet coverage is 100% in Tbilisi, Batumi, Stepantsminda and Borjomi regions. In 13 districts only 35% of the population has internet, while in other districts the level of internet penetration is 50-70%.

Recently, Starlink Internet was officially launched in Ukraine.
